Fast and comfortable, these are great cars for long trips and for commuting on harsh, busy highways. the lexus gs sedans have no peers for interior luxury and smooth ride. The interiors are wonderful, warm and pleasant in ambieance with light hues of buttery leather and rich wood. The controls are a study in ergonomic excellence, elegantly designed and easy to understand and operate. The back seats are among the most comfortable in the class. lexus continues to deliver some of the best quality in the industry and its gs sedans are no exception. The gs 300 and gs 430 were ranked first in their class, the mid-size luxury segment, in the may 2003 initial quality study by j. Power and associates. lineupthe lexus gs series comes in two versions: the six-cylinder gs 300 38,725) and the v8-powered gs 430 47,825). gs 300 is powered by a high-output, 220-horsepower 3. 0-liter inline-6. Gs 300 comes standard with cloth upholstery and automatic climate control with filtration and deodorization. Leather upholstery is optional 1,660) and comes with a memory system. gs 430 comes with a 4. 3-liter double overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower. Gs 430 also comes standard with perforated leather upholstery; memory for the driver's seat, outside mirrors and steering column; and high-intensity discharge headlights. both models are equipped with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, but the gs 300 also features e-shift manual controls on the spokes of the steering wheel. options include a navigation package 2,000) and a superb mark levinson audio system 1,250). safety features that come standard for both models include vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control, dual frontal airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for driver and front-seat passenger, and seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters. The gs models also come standard with side curtain airbags for the driver and front passenger, very important because curtain airbags can provide protection for the head and upper body in side impacts. walkaroundthe lexus gs models make a strong visual statement. The design of the current, second-generation models is now in its sixth year, but it still has arresting looks. It's a classier design than that of its rival from japan, the infiniti m45. most noticeable are the unique football-shaped headlamps that sweep up and back into the fenders. A separate set of inner front lights serve as the high beams and give the gs a distinctive look. this look is echoed at the rear of the car with large multi-lens taillights that wrap around to the sides with a separate set of inner lamps that serve as tail lamps and brake lamps. Dual exhaust exiting from the rear bumper gives the gs models sports appeal; the rear bumper curves out at the bottom for aerodynamic ground-effects. An available rear spoiler adds to the racy look, but we think the car looks better without it and it probably doesn't improve the handling of what's essentially an understeering car. in profile, the gs presents a dramatically sloping nose, with the lower edge of the windshield pushed well forward. Its graceful roofline arches back to a stubby rear deck, giving it what one magazine describes as a hunchback look. A chrome strip surrounds the side windows and accents the shape of the glass. This strikes an interesting contrast with the flat black window posts. For engineering reasons, the rear door glass is divided into two panes, with a separate fixed pane in the rear, a compromise that breaks up the graceful sweep of glass. interiorlots of leather, tasteful applications of wood, thick carpeting and a refined overall design provide a pleasant environment inside the lexus gs 300 and gs 430. It manages to feel roomy and cozy at the same time. The view out the front of the gs is excellent, but the rear view is restricted somewhat by the rear headrests and wide c-pillars. the gs 430 instrument panel is a refreshing departure from other designs from japan. Turn on the ignition, and a black panel illuminates to reveal gauges with black markings on white faces, all lit from the rear. The intensity of the backlighting automatically varies with ambient light. The gauges are handsome, creatively designed and easy to read. There's a useful compass in the rear-view mirror. audio and climate controls are logically laid out and easy to use, with separate heating and cooling settings for driver and passenger. A smog sensor automatically switches to the system into recirculation mode, blocking contaminated air from entering the cabin. An air filtration and deodorization system takes care of the rest, nice when pulling up behind a city bus. The remote releases for the fuel tank and trunk, located low on the left side of the dash, are initially hard to find, and the center armrest obscures the seat-heater buttons. an optional touch-screen dvd-based navigation system calculates routes quickly. The lcd fills the center of the dash and handles audio and climate control functions as well as the trip computer. the standard audio setup in the gs is very good. A sensor stops the window or roof panel and warns the driver when anything (such as a child or pet) is blocking its path. The supplied keyless remote can be used to operate the windows and/or moonroof automatically. A hidden electric garage-door opener can be programmed for nearly all frequencies. the trunk lid raises a full 90 degrees, and the lift-over height is low for easy loading and unloading. At 14. 8 cubic feet, cargo capacity is comparable to that of other cars of its size. driving impressionthe lexus gs sedans offer a nice balance between performance and luxury, leaning more to the luxury side of the equation than their competitors from germany. They are an excellent choice for the driver who values a smooth ride, a quiet cabin, and hassle-free operation over sharp handling and racetrack performance. That is a big difference in dollars, but it's also a huge difference in performance. Equipped with a v8 engine, the gs 430 accelerates much more quickly than the gs 300. Plus the gs 430 comes with a higher level of equipment than the gs 300. like bmw, lexus uses an inline-6 for the gs 300, and enthusiasts tend to prefer inline six-cylinder engines over the more popular v6 configuration (which costs less to build and takes up less space). The inline-6 used in the gs 300 is a wonderful engine. It purrs like a kitten and we think it's smoother than the six-cylinder engines from bmw and mercedes. The 3. 0-liter engine produces 220 horsepower and lexus claims it can propel the gs 300 from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 8 seconds and through the quarter mile in 18. 8 seconds. That's brisk performance, but don't expect to win many drag races. It earns an 18/23 mpg city/highway rating from the epa, which is average for the class. the gs 430 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 8 seconds, according to lexus, putting it in a league with some of the world's best sport sedans. Yet its sound is very subtle, a high-tech mechanical note rather than the angry racket of a corvette's v8. The 4. 3-liter v8 produces 300 horsepower and 325 foot-pounds of torque. Strong low-rpm torque gives the gs 430 plenty of around-town cruising power, and allows it to sprint away from intersections. Lexus says it can turn the quarter mile in 14. 2 seconds. In spite of its impressive acceleration, the gs 430 nets an epa-rated 23 mpg on the highway and is certified as an ultra low emissions vehicle (ulev). all lexus gs sedans come with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission and a console shifter. It's a smooth and responsive transmission. The gs 300 can also be shifted by using a set of buttons on the front and back of the steering wheel. First look at all-new luxury utility vehicle. introductionwith the rx 300, lexus has had the best-selling luxury suv in not only america but the world. But the rx 300 was introduced in 1998 and, with a growing number of challengers, lexus can't afford to stand still. (no one can.) therefore, the rx 300 has been replaced by the all-new 2004 lexus rx 330. lexus calls the rx 330 a luxury utility vehicle, and is bold enough to dub it an 'luv.' the rx 330 falls into that category of suv that is based on a unit-body car platform rather than a truck frame, and it could be called a crossover vehicle. It comes with a leather interior that feels soft and warm and inviting with splashes of real wood trim. Rx 330 2wd 35,025) uses front-wheel drive. Rx 330 4wd 36,425) has an all-wheel drive system. The premium package 2,145) includes leather, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, roof rack, and moonroof. The premium plus package 3,440) adds a power liftgate, hid headlamps and a wood and leather steering wheel. the performance package 5,455) includes all of the items in the premium package, plus 18-inch plated aluminum alloy wheels, air suspension, sequential shifting transmission, power rear door, hid headlamps with afs (see walkaround), and rain-sensing wipers. There's also a multi-panel moonroof available that's larger than the standard moonroof with other features bundled in for $4,220. An available navigation system includes a rear-view camera 2,350). Dynamic cruise control 600) and a rear-seat entertainment system 1,840) are also available. walkaroundlexus rx 330 joins the trend of zoomier styling on crossover suvs, notably the new infiniti fx45. Rx 330 is much sleeker than the rx 300, making the older model look really dated. Unlike the rx 300, which had a body-color c-pillar, the d-pillar is emphasized on the rx 330, and is more steeply raked. There's more rake to the windshield as well, and the front facia and headlamps are reminiscent of the lexus es 300 sedan. although there are definite car cues to the new design, lexus designers have also included meatier elements, such as the beefy front bumper and pronounced fender flares. Well-designed door handles are of the reach-through type that are more hand-friendly than the fingertip-grip variety, less chance of breaking long fingernails. a novel feature, something not seen on the u. Market since the 1949 tucker, is the adaptive front lighting system (afs). This system swivels the left and right headlamp as determined by an onboard processor that calculates the optimum angle to provide the best illumination, allowing drivers to see around corners better. It's available only as part of the performance package. a rear view of the rx 330 reveals a visor over the top edge of the rear window, a short radio antenna at the right rear corner of the roof (promising better reception in marginal areas than the imbedded-in-glass type), and clear-lensed taillamps. The latter are trendy with the sport compact kids; we think they should stay there, as these don't seem to be as visible, especially in bright sunlight, as the old-fogy red lenses. the lexus rx 330 competes with the volvo xc90 33,350), acura mdx 34,900), mercedes-benz m-class 37,670), bmw x5 39,995), and infiniti fx45 44,225), among others. The rx 330 utilizes a modified version of the platform used by the lexus es300 sedan, toyota camry, and toyota highlander sport-utility. interiorit doesn't take more than a glance inside to know the lexus rx 330 is aimed at the luxury suv market. Leather on the seats (on most models) is soft and slightly bunched, and there are splashes of real wood trim on the doors and center console. The instrument panel has three large round gauges trimmed in silver. The center dash area, or stack, is framed in metal-looking plastic. climate controls are located high on the center stack and to either side of an lcd screen used to control ventilation, audio, trip computer, outside temperature and clock (with alarm). The radio has a knobs for volume and tuning, much easier to use than the typical german system that has tuning buttons that default to a seek mode. the screen is also used for the optional navigation system as well as the rear-view camera that comes with it. The camera works automatically when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Big outside mirrors afford a good view rearward. a novelty when the rx 300 was introduced, the shifter for the automatic transmission is still located on the center stack. Rather than the popular tip-shift for sportier rides, the rx 330's shifter has a zig-zag pattern for shifting between gears. We found it made shifting between reverse, drive and lower gears ponderous, particularly when in a hurry. the front seats are positioned off the floor at a comfortable chair height and are snug and supportive. Foldable armrests on both front seats provide additional comfort on longer trips. The center console slides forward and back, allowing room for a purse or whatever on the floor between the front seats. the back seats are roomy and comfortable. There's a folding center armrest with cupholders, storage and its own wood trim. That's more cargo space than a lincoln aviator (77. 1) or infiniti fx35 (64. 5) and certainly more than a bmw x5 (54. 4) has to offer. But the rx 330's rear seats don't fold for a completely flat cargo floor. We found loading and unloading a mountain bike easier in a mercury mountaineer. The rx 330 adds two hidden compartments under the cargo floor for additional storage. The side-impact airbags, standard, are large, protecting the torso, abdomen and hips. lexus link is an optional system that summons aid, using satellite and cell phone technology, at the touch of a button or automatically with airbag deployment. Based on gm's onstar system, lexus link can also pinpoint vehicle location for roadside assistance, or in case of theft. However, many of them ride like trucks, get poor gas mileage, and are tall and tippy. This has led to the popularity of models based on car platforms, of which the original lexus rx 300 was the pioneer. the new lexus rx 330 is an advance in this mien. It's notable for its smooth ride even over broken, potholed pavement. Like the previous rx 300, the rx 330 should be good on dirt and gravel roads as well, though we haven't tried this. We found the rx 330 poised in corners, the steering light and accurate. Its fully independent suspension keeps the tires in contact with the pavement for lots of grip. the 3. 3-liter v6 zips the rx 330 to speed (from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 8 seconds, according to lexus). Larger than last year's engine, the v6 develops a healthy 230 horsepower and 242 pounds-feet of torque. Torque is the twist that yields acceleration, and the rx 330's torque peak comes at a relatively low 3600 rpm. The lower first gear allows quicker dig off the line, good when having to merge into traffic from a standing start. The higher fifth gear allows lower revs at cruise, which translates into quieter running with less engine noise, plus better gas mileage and longer engine life because the engine doesn't go around as many times. At times, the transmission seemed slow to downshift, however. the rx 330 is free from road noise and wind noise even when equipped with a roof rack. Lexus engineers took the time to aer.
